LOST IN TIME

Sammi Josephine, Lost in Time, 2026, Oil Painting, 16 in x 20 in.

Based on an already existing composition, I reworked Paul Headly’s impressionist painting, into one that depicts time and space. I wanted to use ideas from the movie Arrival, a film displaying a nonlinear timeline creating a cyclical passage of time, to create the feeling of experiencing time simultaneously, by showing multiple subjects all at once. With this concept as a base, I also pulled ideas from David Hockney's photography, where he explores how the human vision experiences time, with multiple photos shot at different viewpoints, he is able to create a feeling as lived experience instead of a static moment in time. I deconstructed the figure in the foreground, to show the passage of time, with different images while still staying within the general composition of the original painting. The main goal of this piece is to really show the concept of time as nonlinear, and how memories and thoughts can get jumbled up and mixed together. I used the technique impasto, it creates a static distorted feeling overlaying the whole image.
